At Opolo, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword – it’s a way of life. With over 25 years of cultivating our estate vineyards in Paso Robles, our commitment to sustainable practices has only grown stronger. As a SIP Certified vineyard, we’ve always prioritized conscious grape growing, ensuring that every drop of wine in your glass reflects our dedication to the environment. But our sustainability journey doesn’t stop there.
Recent Initiatives
In a bid to make even greater strides towards sustainability, Opolo has implemented several initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint and minimize waste. Here’s a glimpse at what we’ve been up to:
Reducing Emissions
- Lighter Glass, Lower Emissions: Transitioning to lighter-weight glass molds has allowed us to eliminate 264,000 pounds of production and shipping weight annually, resulting in substantial emission cuts.
- Powered by the Sun: Our vineyard operations and estate tasting room are now offset by solar energy, reducing our carbon footprint and dependence on the grid.
- Central Coast Distribution Hub: Opolo is spearheading a Central Coast logistics hub initiative to reduce truck mileage, cutting regional freight emissions in half

Efficiency Upgrades
- Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond energy. Over the past five years, we’ve upgraded all lighting and refrigeration systems at our winery, resulting in a remarkable 55% reduction in total energy usage.
Designing for Circularity
- Packaging with Purpose: From boxes to glassware, all packaging at Opolo is recyclable, emphasizing our accountability in minimizing waste at every step of the winemaking process.
- Less Waste, More Accountability: Opolo is dedicated to circularity and impact, ensuring that waste is minimized and our practices reflect our commitment to environmentally conscious operations.
As we celebrate Earth Day, let us toast to dedication to sustainability, innovative practices, and responsible winemaking. Join us in raising a glass to a greener, more sustainable future for viticulture and environmental stewardship. Cheers to Opolo, where great wine meets a greater purpose of preserving our planet!
